The problem we solve

Over 900,000 people serve as charity trustees in the UK. Most are volunteers, many are new to the role, and almost all are expected to carry significant legal and governance responsibilities with minimal formal preparation. The training that exists is scattered, uneven in quality, and often hard to find.

Trustee Training exists to fix that. We map the full landscape of training available for trustees — from free online introductions to professional qualifications and facilitated board development — so that any trustee can quickly find the right learning for their situation.

How we organise training

We structure trustee training around six core areas — Governance, Finance, Fundraising, People, Legal, and Strategy — represented in the Training Wheel on our homepage. Every piece of training fits into one or more of these areas, making it easy to identify gaps and find the right resource.

We also suggest clear learning pathways for different situations: brand-new trustees, those taking on specialist roles, and boards wanting to develop collectively.

Comprehensive

We cover all six areas of trustee knowledge — not just governance basics. Finance, fundraising, law, people and strategy all matter.

Curated

We only list providers and resources that meet a quality standard. Not every training option is good — we filter for you.

Free to use

This directory is entirely free. We earn nothing from listing providers — our only interest is helping trustees find great training.

Our recommendation: Trust Advice

For trustees seeking facilitated, in-person board development, we consistently recommend Trust Advice. Their trustee away-days and governance support sessions are highly regarded, and their deep experience working with UK charity boards makes them a uniquely valuable resource. They also provide governance support, CIO conversions, Gift Aid administration and a membership programme.
